The Changing Mountains - Beacons Way

Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, In : Adventure report
So recently I've been involved with the review of the long distance footpath that crosses the Brecon Beacons, looking at how to improve, simplify or problem solve where necessary.
As part of this work I have to walk sections of the route, not a bad way to spend a day...

Yesterday I walked from Llangynidr to Story Arms Via Pen y Fan, 24km with over 100m height gain. Most of this was straight forward until the end when the weather turned a little "wintery" and my walking companion (Obi) and I fo...

Climbing at Range West

Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Monday, June 8, 2015, In : Adventure report
The only people climbing at range West in Pembroke on Sunday, beautiful scenery, great rock and awesome fossils everywhere made it a day to remember.
You need to attend a briefing to access the military firing range above the cliffs, then avoid all of the shells laying on the floor on the walk in, but once you are there its an amazing place to climb.
There are routes of all grade, including lots at the lower end, but as with most other crags in Pembrokeshire you need t be able to abseil to get ...

Sunshine through the rain

Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Friday, August 29, 2014, In : Adventure report
And this is why we never cancel a day out just because of the weather forecast! Heavy rain as we left town and bad weather forecast for most of the day - but when we arrived on Gower the sun was out and not a drop hit us all day - even caught the sun.

Gower really does have its own micro climate making it a great place to climb all year round, even if the weather man says its raining - you wont hear us complaining - it'll fine on Gower!

Caving in South Wales

Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Friday, November 29, 2013, In : Adventure report
A quick trip after work into one of the more beautifully decorated caves in South Wales. There are some stunning formations and some sporting challenges including one rather tight bit.

The cave is stunning, but fragile, so no beginner trips i'm afraid. Its only suitable for small groups of experienced cavers, so one for you in the future perhaps...

Back in Wales and back on the rock!

Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, In : Adventure report

Well i'm back from another success expedition to Peru and have hit the ground running with a busy week rock climbing.
The highlight has been a leading course with 13 year old Catrin who ticked 5 leads in a day from S to HVS!
Keep an eye on that one, I think she'll go far...

Today was more of a wet one but we still had fun with the lads from london, climbing and abseiling with occasional views of the Brecon Beacons National Park in between the showers.

Well I've returned safely from 2 weeks in the Moroccan Anti Atlas mountains.
Our team of 4 spent nearly every day climbing extreme routes hundreds of meters long in the African heat. We even had the opportunity to climb new routes on virgin rock, the reward, a new 5 pitch VS 5a in Ice Box Canyon.

The rock was good, the people were lovely and the climbing outstanding. All in all an excellent trip!

Give it another year and it might be the sort of place that I could be taking clients to. The only...

Scrambling by the Sea

Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Monday, April 8, 2013, In : Adventure report
A Scrambling Skills course - by the sea?

Thats what Robert from Hereford booked last week, a little unusual as venues go, but the crags of South Wales, Gower in particular have some surprises in store.

Scrambling is the fine line between walking and climbing, where judgement and skill are combined with adventure and exploration. Sometimes using your hands, and sometimes relying on them separates this activity from being just a walk in the hills. We spent the day looking at scrambling movement...
