Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Thursday, January 26, 2017, In : Updates

So over these quieter winter months I find myself spending less time doing outdoor stuff and more time talking about it. I'm in a lucky position were I get to talk to government departments like tourism, sport and health and try to boost both our industry profile, and the impact we can have on the economy, health and happiness of the country. My most recent work has been with Public Health Wales, putting together an information sheet about how engaging in the outdoors benefits your Wellbeing....

Even with the Autumn weather closing in we're still out there and doing what we do best, but now we need a waterproof and some luck to stay dry!
Climbing hard can be impossible in the wet, but learning skills, techniques and having a great time are always possible - you just need to head out with the right guy.

This lovely pile of shiny new climbing kit was delivered from DDM last week, replacing the older nuts, slings and krabs to give a fresher, safer and lovelier looking rack just waiting for its first use. The change in season doesn't mean that the climbing season is over, it just means that we'll be packing to belay gloves, an extra jacket and a thermos for the day.

If we only ever went out when the weather was perfect, we'd never go outside...

Self Rescue Success

Posted by Matthew Woodfield on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, In : Updates
This weekend saw us working with Swansea University Mountaineering Club, teaching them the skills and techniques needed to avoid and manage common climbing problems.
They looked at tying off a belay plate, lowering safely, assisted and unassisted hoists, prusiking and simple tricks to save using these skills in the first place.
Its was a standard sunny day on Gower and the team had a great time, let hope if they ever need it, it'll come in useful.

If you or your club could benefit from some ski...

The photo shows them practicing a counterbalanced abseil after picking up a suck climber. Its all pretty technical stuff but they picked up the skills fast and learnt a lot.

I'll be back next time to work on the skills and techniques required to teach lead climbing inside.
